Fairmont Hotel at St. Andrews unveils plans for "world class" golf course

The Fairmont Hotel at St Andrews has unveiled plans to build a world-class golf course that will attract visitors from all corners of the world.

According to the owners of the resort, they want to create a brand-new championship golf course which will be found from the existing 18-hole Torrance and Kittocks courses.

St Andrews Bay Development bought the hotel and resort in 2019. Now, they have applied for permission from Fife Council to carry out an extension and engineering operation.

"The vision is to create a world-class golf course that could become one of the top 100 courses in the world," read a statement in support of the application.

"Such a move would enhance the hopes of attracting European Tour events - The creation of the championship course would be the first phase of the overall upgrade of all golfing facilities on the resort.

"At present, the two existing golf courses are outstanding tests of golf and the resort, as a whole, is a well-established asset to the St Andrews and Fifewide economy and tourism sector.

"As golf course design, technology and maintenance of golf courses have evolved, there is an opportunity at St Andrews Bay to adjust and remodel the courses to establish the location as one of the ‘must-play’ courses in Scotland and the world, with the aim being to draw golfers from around the world."

The current golf courses were originally built on farmland. In order to create the new championship golf course, sand for the fairways will need to be imported and some holes will be remodelled.

This news adds even more excitement and anticipation in the St Andrews area as it prepares for the 150th Open Championship in July.
