Jordan Smith sees Ryder Cup as "realistic target" after solid DP World Tour form

DP World Tour winner Jordan Smith views a spot in the Ryder Cup as "a realistic target" as he has become one of the circuit's most consistent players in 2022.

Speaking to GolfMagic, Smith also has the PGA Tour on his mind as from 2023, the top 10 players in the DP World Tour rankings will be granted cards to play on the American circuit.

The Englishman, who has just one win on the former European Tour to his name, has been very unfortunate not to double or treble his victory tally this season. He has made seven top-10s, including two runner-up finishes, so another win is on the tip of his tongue.

Despite a disappointing disqualification at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Smith experienced happier times at St Andrews back in July when he secured a top-50 finish at The 150th Open.

The man from Wiltshire wants to make more appearances at the game's biggest events and after missing out on the DP World Tour Championship in 2021, he is unlikely to experience this disappointment again in November with his current ranking of 14th.

"I was incredibly disappointed to miss out last year (the DPWT Championship) which gave me extra motivation to ensure that didn't happen again. I really enjoy the earth course and feel my game is well-suited to it," Smith said.

"My focus will be on the DP World Tour next season, especially with the 10 PGA Tour cards available from next season. I'll look forward to playing in the co-sanctioned events and at least a few majors.

"I do see it (Ryder Cup) as a realistic target. I've played really solid this year, I'm very settled with my equipment and team, so I just need to keep working on the areas that need to get a little better.

"I would say a major would be top of my career goal list, but the Ryder Cup wouldn't be far behind."

The Ryder Cup has an extremely different complexion this time around. LIV Golf players are still able to earn qualification points on the DP World Tour, but not on the LIV Golf Tour.

European captain Luke Donald will have six captain's picks which could play into Smith's hands, as the skipper could be more inclined to choose in-form DP World Tour players over those on the Saudi-backed series.

The likes of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland are likely to occupy the top spots in the European and World Points Lists, but if his targets come to fruition, Smith may not require a pick at all.
