Lee Westwood URGES all golfers to repair their PITCH MARKS

Lee Westwood has taken to social media to encourage all golfers around the world to make sure they repair their pitch marks on the golf course, especially this winter.

Westwood repaired a pitch mark of his own at his local Close House Golf Club up in Newcastle to make his point be known to golfers.

There is a real premium on repairing pitch marks on greens right now with most greens playing much softer due to the conditions.

Not only will repairing a pitch mark keep you in the good books with your greenkeeper, but it will also help maintain your course and ensure the putting surfaces remain as perfect as possible so you can enjoy your winter golf.

"Hi guys, as you can see it's winter, and now more important than ever to repair those pitch marks," said Westwood in his video post.

"Greens are softer so they are making bigger marks.

"If you are hitting lots of greens, it won't take a second, make sure you repair those pitch marks, it's like we were never here.

"The greens will be a lot better to putt on as well."

Here's how a number of Westwood's followers reacted to the post:

"Have a new rule. One shot penalty for not repairing a pitch mark. It's a joke that people don't repair them and usually they are the ones moaning about the state of the greens."

"Thank you for reminding all golfers. It's not hard and it's respectful to the club, members and most importantly the greenkeepers."

"Is there a club in the land that doesn't suffer the phantom pitch mark deniers?"

"Repair your own and one other and there be none whatsoever."

"I don't get pitch marks in the bunker."

"You didn't mark your ball before picking it up... there's a stroke penalty at least."

"Unfortunately the seniors who are the main culprits won't be on Twitter so you're spot on point is largely wasted."

1) Pick up your repair tool and insert it just to the back of the ball mark.

2) Pull up the turf towards the centre of the hole. Then repeat this motion on all sides of the hole.

3) Tap down the repaired area with your putter to provide instant recovery of the pitch mark.
