Report: Former Masters champion Angel Cabrera convicted of assault again

Former Masters champion Angel Cabrera told a court "prison has done me good" before he was convicted of assaulting his former girlfriend for the second time.

Cabrera, now 53 years old, was convicted on Monday 7 November and was given a prison sentence of two years and four months.

The Argentinian won the 2009 Masters - the second major of his career - via a playoff over Americans Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry.

To this day he remains the only player from Argentina to have won the coveted major.

In this latest case, Cabrera was convicted of assaulting Micaela Escudero. He was also reported to have stolen her phone.

The charges filed stated that Cabrera had inflicted minor injuries upon her as well as the victim suffering coercion and threats of coercion.

Per various reports in Argentina, he reportedly told the court during his trial:

"Many say prison is bad, but it's not the case, prison has done me good."

The first time he was jailed related to charges involving Cecilia Torres Mana, who was his partner between 2016 and 2018.

Cabrera always denied wrongdoing after he was extradited back to his home country in June 2021.

He was arrested in Brazil having spent time on the run from the Argentine case. Cabrera had also been on Interpol's "red code" list.

When it came to trial, Torres Mana's case was joined by Cabrera's former wife Silva Rivadero and Escudero.

Per a report by Bunkered's Michael McEwan, Cabrera is being held at a prison called the Carcel de Bouwer, near Cordoba.

McEwan reported that the prison is nicknamed "El Penal del Infierno" which translates to "Prison of Hell".

Cabrera is widely considered to be the best golfer Argentina have ever produced. He is nicknamed "El Pato", which means "The Duck".

He was given that name because of the way he walks.

Cabrera also won the 2007 U.S. Open and had another near miss at the 2013 Masters, losing out to the LIV Golf-linked Adam Scott.

He is credited with 47 worldwide wins. The highest world ranking he ever achieved was No. 9 in 2005.
