Three EFFORTLESS moves to help senior golfers hit LONGER drives

One of the beautiful things about golf is the fact that you don't have to stop playing when you hit 50. You can keep on going for as long as you can swing a club, although you will notice you lose a lot of distance once your body starts to become less flexibility, but there are a few things you can do to help you hit longer drives into your later years...

In the video below, PGA professional and golf coach Danny Maude teams up with the Meandmygolf duo Andy and Piers, to explain three effortless moves that senior golfers can do to help them keep up with the young guns.

THREE MOVES TO HELP SENIOR GOLFERS HIT BOMBS

1. Store energy in the backswing: There are a few things you can do in your set-up and backswing that help generate a lot of power. Firstly, flare your right foot out slightly and slide it back just a little, as this will allow your hips to rotate further than they would if you stand with square feet. When making your backswing, allow your right leg to straighten and your left knee to move inside the ball as again this allows for a bigger turn. The final part in the backswing is lifting the heel of your left leg off the ground a little. Do all these moves together and no matter your age you will be able to turn a lot more than you think your body lets you.

2. Hit up on the ball: Hitting up in the ball means you get the ball in the air quickly which leads to longer drives. A simple drill to work on this on the driving range is place a box of golf balls infront of your ball, about a grip's length away and hit a few shots where you are trying to avoid hitting the box on the way through. This will help give you the feeling of hitting up on the ball.

3. Release the hands: A lot of senior golfers fall victim to the 'chicken wing' shot where they try to keep the clubface aiming at the target. To add more distance you need to release the hands which will help make your ball roll out a lot further. A way of practicing this is the 'laser butt' drill where you work on hitting drives and at the top of your follow-through, the butt of your grip should be facing your target line.
